This is a new line of electric guitar string from the Gibson Guitar co. called Gibson Gear, Elgin, Illinois U. S. A. It’s new to me…

I’ve written articles calling the Gibson electric guitar string “the best” actually; they are my prized electric guitar strings. Like I’ve said before, “I’ve used most of the major string brands and I play all the time. Also, I know it’s been said time and again “that guitar strings have so much in common that there’s no discernable difference between the various brands of strings”. I can understand this sentiment, yet I’ve come to understand a few things regarding the manufacturing and the elements involved making the string do what it does.

Things like, cover to core ratio, (the gauge or diameter of the wire used for the strings). If you were to put a thicker core the string would seem to have a stiff feel, where if you’d use a thinner core wire the string would be feel loose and seem to bend more easily. Too much in either direction, and the string doesn’t work for anyone. The same for the alloys or types or metal used to make the string effects the sound and feel.

I was a die-hard steel wrapped string guy since the early eighties starting with Bill Laurence steel wrap guitar strings; I switched to The Gibson “Live Wires” and fell in love with the punch and (feel and sound) consistency not so much the gauge. Later, when the “Vintage Re-Issue” nickel wrapped string came out, I tried those and found that they felt smooth on my fingers and, the strings tended to have a different response and sound which I thought was interesting. I guess the nickel wrap with the plain steel strings made me feel like my solos kicked in the high places. And, I switched to those. You know, I liked the way those strings sounded. There was a nice decay and not too much spike compared to a shorter decay and higher spike like I felt with NPS (“Brite Wires”), yet there was a problem. The nickel cover was a very soft one so I’d encounter fret wear immediately. And, the string would lose tone.

The GIBSON HUMBUCKER strings are made to be more alive or easier for the pick-up to respond to. The package says, “The only guitar string optimized for the humbucking pickup, Gibson Humbucking guitar strings utilize a special composite core wire and a specially formulated wrap wire. This design offers a unique magnetic formulation to make the most of dual-coil high-output pickups”. They sure write purdy.

I don’t use high-output pickups; I use the Gibson ’57 Classic” and “Classic Plus” pickups on my Gibson “Explorer” (called my Frankenfiddle). These strings felt good and the tone had a good blend and consistency between the wrapped and plain strings. I just put the strings on my guitars, the “Explorer” and 56 “Les Paul “Jr. (different pickups) forgot about it until I was on stage and rocking. I’ve been using the “Brite Wires” for the last few years Gibson has discontinued the steel wrap (“Live Wires”) because I couldn’t afford to change my strings every single show for a good while there. Which made the “Vintage Re-issue” a no go. Since then I’ve never wanted to play strings that have no sound after the show. Too much hassle. And, the “Brite Wires” sound, was a good sound, everything was there. Nothing jumped out to me and I found myself just “playing guitar”.

So here I am, playing a show and noticed the tone. Plus, my fingers felt different smacking those wires. The rest of the night was fun and “in the moment”. The next week I called Gil Pini at Gibson Gear in Elgin to ask him what was up with these “bad boys” and he hipped me to the extra iron in those “kickin’ rockers”.

I don’t have any “insider details” concerning the “Gibson Humbucker” electric guitar strings. I know they are sealed for protection from oxidization for the elements as all their (Gibson Gear) strings are. These are my immediate reflections as an experienced performing musician, guitarist, and still…. A fan!! Keep up the fantastic work, guys. You ROCK!!!!

When I find out more about the “Gibson Humbucker” electric guitar strings I’ll let you know.

Peace, and find your MUSE,

Michael Tafoya

Electric Guitars

The Electric guitar has not been around nearly when the Acoustic and Classical guitars. In fact, the Electric guitar was created just 70 years ago (the 1930s) by Adolph Rickenbacker. Since that time, the Electric guitar has greatly evolved to the where it is now. In this article, we’ll go over the history of the Electric guitar.

The History

Guitars, or similar instruments, have been around for thousands of years. The Electric guitar was first manufactured in the 1930s by Rickenbacker. Original Electric guitars used tungsten pickups. Pickups basically convert the vibration of the strings into electrical current, which is then fed into the amplifier to produce the sound.

The very earliest Electric guitars featured smaller soundholes in the body. These guitars are known as semi-hollow body Electric guitars and still are somewhat popular today, mainly due to the fact that they’re flexible guitars.

However, with the use of pickups, it was possible to create guitars without soundholes (like the Acoustic and Classical guitars have) that still had the ability to be heard, if plugged into amplifiers. These guitars are called solid body Electric guitars.

The Electric guitar’s popularity began to increase during the Big Band era of the ’30s and 40s. Due to the loudness of the brass sections in jazz orchestras, it was necessary to have guitars that could be heard above the sections. Electric guitars, with the ability to be plugged into amplifiers, filled this void.

The Electric guitar that’s most prevalent today is the solid body Electric guitar. The solid body guitar was created by musician and inventor Les Paul in 1941. It is a guitar made of solid wood with no soundholes. The original solid body guitar created by Paul was very plain–it was a simple rectangular block of wood connected to a neck with six steel strings. Les Paul’s original solid body guitar shape has, of course, changed from the original rectangular shape to the more rounded shape Les Paul guitars have now.

During the 1950s, Gibson introduced Les Paul’s invention to the world. The Gibson Les Paul, as it was and still is called, quickly became a very popular Electric guitar. It has remained the most popular guitar for 50 years.

Around the same period of time, another inventor named Leo Fender came up with a solid body Electric guitar of his own. In the late 1940s, Fender introduced the Fender Broadcaster Electric guitar. The Broadcaster, which was renamed the Stratocaster, was officially introduced to the public in 1954. The Strat, as it is now known, was a very different guitar in comparison to the Les Paul. It had a different shape, different hardware and was significantly lighter. Fender’s Stratocaster Electric guitar is the second most popular guitar in the world, second to only the Les Paul.

Over the years, other companies, such as Ibanez, Jackson, Paul Reed Smith, ESP and Yamaha have all produced solid body Electric guitars of their own. However, most Electric guitars still feature the familiar shape of a Les Paul or Strat guitar.

The group, then named “Girl’s Tyme”, were disappointed after losing the competition but were eventually signed to Columbia Records in 1996.

Destiny’s Child rose to fame in 1998 with their Platinum-selling debut album Destiny’s Child which was produced by Wyclef Jean and Jermaine Dupri and featured the double Platinum number-one single “No, No, No Part 2”.

The group’s second album, The Writing’s on the Wall, released in 1999, featured two number-one hits: “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name”. “Bug a Boo” and “Jumpin’ Jumpin'” were also popular singles from the album. It went on to sell eight million in the U. S. and twelve million copies worldwide. Furthermore, the group won two awards at the 2001 Grammy Awards: “Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals” and “Best R&B Song”.

Their following album, Survivor, proved to be another big success, going to #1 on both the U. S. Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The title track, “Survivor”, earned the group their third Grammy Award, “Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals”.

I’ve been a musician for many years now and over the past few years the net has completely revolutionised the reach and availability of my music.

I’ve been very happy to date with the exposure that social networking sites have opened up to me, my only annoyance was how restrictive sites like myspace are with content.

The recent tendency has been to give out widget codes to users and fans can post content on private sites, blogs and emails.

This new widget by reverbnation. com is by far the best I’ve seen to date.

Information

The mom of all widgets. Featuring a customizable picture, band info, music player loaded with your songs, a video, show schedule (with tour map), “join the mailing list” Fan Collector, and more.

You can also cross-promote other artists at the bottom of the widget. These artists are pulled from the list of artists you recommend, and rotated randomly. Great for helping out friends, label-mates, touring partners, or other artists you think your fans would enjoy. ”

Here is an example of one of mine in action.

Live Bands

Women have often gotten a one word response to the age old question “honey, so what do YOU like in a wedding ring?” The casual response has been usually a grunt, a shrug of the shoulders, or maybe a two word answer like “something gold”. All you have to do is look around the internet these days and see how far the average men’s wedding band as come to see a simple answer could go sooo many different ways.

First and foremost men aren’t usually jumping for joy to get married. It’s true. Most settle on the fact that they’re getting married to someone out of obligation and loyalty. Yes, of course love plays a huge part, but if your man isn’t into jewelry, well, he’s not going to be very discriminative in the kind of ring he wears. . or will he?

Get his attention by leaving little hints around the house or apartment. Leave a piece of metal that looks like gold, or looks like aluminum. You are basically putting the thought in the back of his head to consider some kind of metal when he looks at it.

The next step is to show him how cool different wedding bands look like. The newest fad for wedding bands is Tungsten wedding bands, Titanium wedding bands, and the newish fad of using platinum (often times 2 tone) in wedding bands.

If you step into the mind of your guy, or actually ANY guy, wouldn’t you think that they’d like to wear something that was made of titanium? Absolutely. Something that appears to be indestructible or super strong (titanium) appeals to the innate little boy in every guy. The coolness factor has now been raised in the mind of your man once he starts to consider different metals AND actually cares enough to consider what type of band he’d like to wear.

Some guys are sucker for gold. You’ll usually get some kind of indication of what kind metal your man prefers by what he wears in his normal every day activities. Does he wear a necklace or any jewelry? What kind of metal are they? Does he wear a watch? Is it monocolor, two tone, or what? As I said before, you can usually tell what a man likes from what he is already wearing. But it doesn’t hurt to ask!

Keeping the rest of the marriage together now resides on both of you. You did your part with the wedding band.

Guitar Music

When changing the strings on a classical guitar it is best to change one string at a time. It is not good for the neck of the guitar to have a sudden release of tension and then to have it applied forcefully later. This can lead to distortion of the neck and permanent damage.

As well as this, never tune the string more than a tone above its normal pitch. You can tune it a little sharp (for example, one semitone above normal concert pitch) as this can make the guitar a little ‘brighter’ to play. Tune it any higher and you risk breakage.

Never put steel strings on a classical guitar. It is not constructed to take this exertion and it is easily damaged (the neck can break away from the body).

To string the guitar: – Unwind the old string until the tension is completely released and the string is quite floppy – Unthread the string from the Capstan in the Headstock – Next untie if from the bridge and discard it

You’re now ready to string the guitar: – Start by slipping the string through the corresponding hole in the bridge from the sound hole end – Leave approximately 11/2 inches of the string sticking out past the back of the bridge – Pull the extra string length towards the sound hole and loop it around the string where it originally entered the bridge – Loop the string under and over itself on top of the bridge twice. This forms a figure 8.

– Pull the string tightly away from the sound hole and attach it to the tuning peg as shown below

– Loop the string at the peg head and then twist it around itself before tightening the peg

– Continue to restring the other strings one by one using the above method

After all the strings are restrung, start to tune the strings by starting with the first E treble string. Use the tuning fork to get the A note on the 5th fret. You can tune the other strings from this.

There is another way of securing the string to the bridge. This is called the Letter D method. This is usually used only for the 4th, 5th and 6th strings and is done as follows: – Start as you would with the figure 8 by passing the string through the bridge at the sound hole and leaving 11/2 inches sticking out – Bring the extra string length back and loop around itself then under and over itself ONCE at the very back of the bridge forming the letter D

Supposedly, the figure 8 is better since it has more holding power.

Some things to take note of while restringing and tuning: – Nylon strings, especially trebles, are very stretchy. On the first day they will seem to be never in tune but will stabilize the next day – Don’t stretch the strings when restringing since this make them develop thin areas. Uneven strings do not play in tune – Most intonation problems are due to uneven strings – Experhyment to find the string that sounds best

Remember to take your time when first restringing a guitar. Take care that you learn the correct method. There will be less slippage and breakage or tuning problems if you learn in this way.

When you first put on new strings play all the semitones, fret by fret, along the string length and then retune the guitar. This will allow the strings to stretch more quickly and settle down and stay in tune.

There are a lot of classical guitar strings on the market. It pays to experhyment until you find the one that is right for you

Restringing a guitar can be a bit daunting at first. Approach the task slowly and take time to learn the correct methods.

These days people use their home computers for just about everything you can think of. This includes the capability to share music. One of the easiest and most efficient software programs for sharing music is called Acquisition and it is compatible with the Macintosh. You can download and upload music at the same time. There is a rating system so you can feel confident sharing music with those you do not know but have good feedback.

Acquisition is a free program that you can access, but you will have to learn to accept the various advertising messages. It is really worth it though because it is one of the very best programs out there for sharing music. The files have been verified so you do not have to worry about receiving or sending out any kind of virus when you’re using Acquisition to access music on your computer.

Most people whoever access music online are familiar with iTunes, and Acquisition is also compatible with it. I use them both to play music while on my computer or when I am having a party. Even my children are able to access the music library and listen to what they need from these two programs.

When you’ve a large library of music stored on your computer it can become difficult to locate particular songs. The best program for this is known as Azureus because it allows you to share various types of files. I generally use Acquisition when I need to access new music and then switch to Azureus when I need to find a particular song or those songs by a particular artist.

I can tell you with confidence that these are among the best programs available for sharing music. I have tried most of them out there to see what they have to offer but these stand out from the rest. Even Napster and Limewire just do not measure up. You may need to try them all out for yourself but I am positive you will get the same results as I have.

The issue of sharing music on your computer comes with any issues that you need to be aware of. Watch out for those whoever need to share the music you’ve paid for and have to offer but they do not give anything back in return. You also need to be careful not to step on any toes. There are controversial issues right now about the copyright laws for music. Make sure you only share music that you’ve paid for.
